UCmicroOME

Crosstalk of Gut Microbiota and Host-Derived Fecal MicroRNAs in Ulcerative Colitis

  • Funding source: Research Council of Lithuania
  • Grant agreement number: S-MIP-20-56
  • Date: January 2020 – December 2024
  • Description: Recent studies suggest that host-derived fecal miRNAs may mediate communication between gut microbes and host cells. However, it remains unclear whether changes in fecal miRNAs are driven by specific bacteria or are a consequence of inflammation. In this project, we use advanced techniques - FACS, next generation sequencing, and intestinal organoid models from UC patients - to investigate whether gut bacteria influence miRNA release from intestinal epithelial cells and how this interaction may be altered in UC.
